New Delhi, July 25: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned from the Union Cabinet on Saturday amid sustained nationwide protests over irregularities in competitive examinations, marking a significant political development for the Narendra Modi-led government.
The resignation followed weeks of demonstrations led by students and youth organizations demanding accountability for examination paper leaks, greater transparency in the conduct of competitive examinations, and comprehensive reforms to India’s examination system.
The agitation gathered momentum through indefinite hunger strikes by student leaders, protests across several states, and the “Chalo Sansad” march in New Delhi. During the march, thousands of students and youth attempted to proceed towards Parliament but were stopped by the Delhi Police, leading to detentions and confrontations that drew widespread public attention.
As the protests continued and the issue remained at the centre of public and political debate, pressure mounted on the Union Government to respond. The controversy became a major challenge during the Parliamentary session, with opposition parties demanding ministerial accountability while student organizations insisted that responsibility should be fixed at the highest levels.
Although the Union Government has not officially stated that the resignation was linked to the protests, its timing has led to widespread political interpretation that it was intended to address mounting public concern over the examination controversy.
Several student organizations welcomed the resignation as an important step but maintained that their broader demands—including a transparent investigation into the examination irregularities, action against those responsible, and structural reforms to safeguard the integrity of competitive examinations—remain to be addressed.
Dharmendra Pradhan had served as Union Education Minister since July 2021, overseeing the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and other major education initiatives. His resignation is among the most significant ministerial exits associated with sustained public pressure during the current term of the Union Government.
The Centre is expected to appoint a new Union Education Minister and announce further measures aimed at strengthening the transparency, security, and credibility of India’s examination system.
