How a ‘Godman’ Shielded Himself from Scrutiny

Students, Staff Pressure, and a Red Volvo with a Fake UN Plate in Delhi

New Delhi: At the Sri Sharada Institute of Indian Management in Vasant Kunj, a red Volvo with a forged UN-style number plate became the symbol of fear for female students allegedly harassed by self-styled godman Swami Chaitanyananda Saraswati (also known as Parth Sarthy).

According to police, 32 students recorded statements, of which 17 directly accused him of sexual harassment. The allegations include abusive language, obscene messages, and unwanted physical contact. Several students said institute staff pressured them to comply with the godman’s demands, raising questions about systemic failures at the management level.

“He would call us to his office alone and send lewd messages. When we refused, some staff tried to convince us to meet his expectations,” said one student who gave her statement to police.

The complaint was lodged on August 4 at Vasant Kunj North police station. Police also discovered the red Volvo in the basement of the institute, fitted with a forged UN/diplomatic-style plate, prompting a separate investigation.

“It was intimidating. The car, the fake UN plate, and the aura of power around him — it made us feel like we had no way out,” another student told reporters.

The accused is currently absconding, despite multiple police raids. Investigators have reportedly tracked him to areas near Agra but have not confirmed his arrest. Meanwhile, the Sri Sharada Peetham at Sringeri has publicly distanced itself from Chaitanyananda Saraswati, stating he is no longer associated with the institute.

Why Investigators Are Watching Closely

Institutional Pressure: Students allege that staff encouraged them to meet the accused’s demands. If proven, this suggests active collusion rather than passive neglect.

Fake Diplomatic Plate: Police say the Volvo had a UN-style number plate. Such plates can mislead the public and authorities, creating the illusion of immunity. Investigators are tracing the vehicle’s ownership and modifications.

Multiple Corroborating Complaints: Dozens of independent allegations strengthen the case, but also highlight potential prior institutional negligence.

“This case is not just about one individual. It exposes how perceived religious authority, institutional power, and intimidation can silence vulnerable students,” said a legal expert familiar with the investigation.

How Fake UN/Diplomatic Plates Work

Purpose: Forged UN/diplomatic plates are designed to mimic those issued to foreign missions or international organizations. They can be used to evade traffic rules, gain unearned prestige, or avoid scrutiny during investigations.

Legal Consequences: Possession, display, or use of a fake diplomatic plate is a criminal offense under Indian law. Investigators trace the source through vehicle registration, purchase records, and forensic examination.

In This Case: The red Volvo’s plate is a focus of police investigation, as it may have been used to intimidate students and evade law enforcement.

Police continue to search for the accused, collect digital evidence (messages and calls), and examine the institute’s records. Investigators are also considering institutional accountability — including staff complicity — in addition to pursuing the criminal case against the godman.

“Transparency and accountability are essential. Without them, students remain vulnerable,” said a senior police official.
