Amaravati, Sept 18: The Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution appreciating Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union government for ushering in what it described as “next-generation” Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms.
The resolution, adopted on the opening day of the Assembly’s monsoon session, congratulated Prime Minister Modi for steering the landmark tax rationalization through the GST Council. It also extended gratitude to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for securing unanimity among states on the decision.
While acknowledging that Andhra Pradesh may face short-term revenue losses due to rationalization, the Assembly said the reforms would strengthen cooperative federalism and spur the long-term growth of the national economy. The resolution underlined that the reforms are expected to improve the ease and speed of doing business, support labour-intensive sectors, boost consumption, attract investment, and ensure sustainable economic growth.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, speaking in support of the resolution, announced the formation of a Cabinet sub-committee to study the impact of GST reforms on Andhra Pradesh. The committee will prepare an action plan to maximize the benefits of the new tax structure for the state’s economy and people.
Naidu also highlighted that the reforms could lead to annual savings of nearly ₹8,000 crore for the people of Andhra Pradesh, a boost that would directly strengthen household and business finances.
Despite apprehensions about revenue forgone in the immediate future, the Assembly firmly endorsed the reforms, signalling political consensus that the tax changes will benefit both the state and the nation in the longer run.
