New Delhi: The Government of Andhra Pradesh and Google on Monday signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in New Delhi to establish a 1-gigawatt AI-powered data centre campus in Visakhapatnam, marking an enhancement of Google’s investment commitment to $15 billion—its largest outside the United States.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian formalised the agreement in the presence of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Union IT & Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Andhra Pradesh IT & HRD Minister Nara Lokesh.
The massive investment will be implemented in phases between 2026 and 2030, with the project expected to generate over ₹10,000 crore in annual revenue for the state upon completion. It will also create nearly 5,000 direct jobs and an additional 20,000 to 30,000 indirect opportunities in associated sectors such as energy, infrastructure, and digital services.
The proposed facility will serve as a regional hub for AI development, data storage, and cloud computing, integrating Google’s latest artificial intelligence technologies including its Gemini platform. The Vizag campus will also be linked to international sub-sea cable systems connecting over a dozen countries across Asia-Pacific, strengthening India’s role in global data and AI networks.
To support infrastructure and power requirements, the Andhra Pradesh government will provide dedicated land and green energy allocations, while Google will collaborate with partners including Adani Enterprises and Bharti Airtel to execute the project.
Chief Minister Naidu described the MoU as a “historic leap toward transforming Visakhapatnam into India’s AI capital.”
Now its a documented commitment
The MoU ceremony in New Delhi was marked by strong statements from both government and corporate stakeholders. Government sources (via PIB) present the project as a pivotal moment in Andhra Pradesh’s development trajectory, projecting large revenue inflows, significant employment generation, and enhanced infrastructure. Meanwhile, Google and its ecosystem partners portray the Andhra Pradesh AI hub as a foundational move to deepen AI capabilities in India, linking renewable energy, sub-sea connectivity, and scalable compute.
With these official releases now in public domain, the MoU is no longer just a political announcement but a documented commitment by both the state and global tech players to make Visakhapatnam a central node in India’s AI infrastructure map.
Adani says its a joint project
In a separate statement, Adani Enterprises said the partnership will combine Google’s global AI infrastructure with AdaniConneX’s expertise in sustainable data centre design and operations. The company stated that the Visakhapatnam campus will be powered entirely by renewable energy, supported by new solar and wind generation projects to be developed within Andhra Pradesh.
The facility will be integrated with Google’s international sub-sea cable network, providing low-latency connectivity across 12 Asia-Pacific countries, including Singapore, Malaysia, and Australia.
